Ampyx Floating Airborne Wind Energy System

Ampyx Power have carried out research on the floating application of their Airborne Wind Energy System that has a rigid wing to generate kite power. Since it was discovered that the tips of the wind turbine blade are responsible for capturing the most energy. Ampyx Power decided to replace the tips with a plane, so that they would be able to harvest the strong and constant wind that is found at higher altitudes.

They then went on to tether the wing to the winch located on the a surface below, which in turn drives the generator. In order to be deployed in the ocean, floating platforms have to be built. This allows the system to function even in deep waters. They use a simple docking installation system that does not require floating cranes.

The platform is pulled into position by a ship or tug boat, and the anchored down. The depth can be anywhere between 60 to 300 meters. When it is time to inspect or carry out maintenance work, they land the aircraft on the platform. Technicians come in by boat and carry our the required work. The whole platform can even be towed back to show for any required refurbishment.
