It looks like we will soon be moving from offshore wind turbine farms, to those that are powered by kites. In early August 2019, wind energy company Makani Power, managed to test flight its wind energy kite from a platform floating in the North Sea just off the coast of Karmøy, Norway.
The advantage of installing kites instead of turbines offshore is that you can do so anywhere there is a strong wind present. Unlike with wind turbines, that are difficult to install in deeper waters, kites are launched off floating platforms which can be moved into areas that have really strong winds.
The video below shows the launch as well as the kite in action as the crew monitors its vitals. Looks like it was a successful test flight and hopefully we will start to see more of these wind kites along our shore lines.
