Improving the performance of a small wind turbine can be a challenge. When it comes to reliability and efficiency it is usually not that great. At Clarkson University, they have their own wind turbine test site. They build and test wind turbines, at this site. They have been at it for more than 15 years now.
The latest concept that they have been testing is not a new one at all. It involves taking a duct and wrapping it around the turbine’s blades. This is done in an attempt to try increase the performance of the blades. They are not just trying to increase the energy output, but also trying to reduce the cost of producing the energy.
